Inlays and onlays are very large fillings covering large areas of a tooth.  Traditionally, the gold in lay or onlay was dentistry's finest restoration.  The fit and comfort and longevity of a well done gold restoration were excellent.  However, with today's sense of esthetics these are at thing of the past.  Composites and porcelain inlays and onlays are available.  In my opinion they have limited usefulness when excellent, long lasting beautiful crowns can be made.
